Osgiliath
"... Osgiliath, Citadel of the Stars..."
The Council of Elrond

No sooner had he returned from Ithilien Faramir is sent by Denethor to attempt to hold back the evil forces trying to break through Osgiliath - the last protection between Mordor and Gondor.
Osgiliath is little more than a ruin standing on either side of the river Anduin. It was once the main city of Gondor and was known to the Elves as the 'Citadel of the Stars'. As hard times fell upon the people of Gondor Osgiliath's inhabitants retreated to Minas Tirith, adding a little more space between them and Mordor. Over the years time and war degraded the city so that now all that remains is a shadow of it's former self.
Now the Eastern bank has been taken over by Mordor's forces and so Faramir and his men must try to prevent their taking over of the Western bank. Should this happen the way would be open for an attack on Minas Tirith.
Faramir and his men fight valliantly, but they are outnumbered, despite their best efforts the Western bank is taken and they are forced to pull back lest they are all slaughtered. However in the retreat Faramir is gravely wounded. He is returned to his father whose madness finally peaks and soon it seems that the young Peregrin Took is the only sane being left in Minas Tirith!
Helplessly watch as Denethor takes the wounded Faramir to the tombs of the Stewards
