Moria
"What's the Elvish word for friend?"
Frodo/Merry?

The Fellowship are forced into the mines of Moria after suffering the wrath of Saruman on the summit of Caradhras. At the entrance to the mines there is a riddle which must be solved, however upon entering the mines they are not treated to the lavish welcoming ceremony that Gimli promised them. Instead bones litter the floor showing that they are no longer mines, but tombs.
Yet when the nine turn to leave they are greeted by The Watcher, a great creature living in the lake outside the entrance. They are trapped and with no way out they must go on and on, into the very depths of the mountain and hope that they can find the way out.
Whilst travelling through the mines they stop at the tomb of Balin, where Gimli mourns his passing. It is while they are waiting here that they are ambushed by a cave troll and a host of goblins, and while they manage to escape, more or less unscathed, something else is awoken. A Balrog.
It is this firey creature which Gandalf battles on the Bridge of Khazad-dűm and it is here that Gandalf is lost when he falls into shadow during the battle. However the Company have little time to mourn his passing as they must continue with their journey before the dark creatures of Moria catch up with them and so they have no choice but to press on towards Lothlórien to seek shelter in the company of the fair Elves residing there.
