Faramir
"A chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality."
Faramir

The mysterious leader of the Rangers is Faramir, the younger son of Denethor - the Steward of Gondor, and brother of Boromir. As a captain of the Rangers Faramir has the task of patrolling the land of Ithilien to prevent the Orcs and other servants of Sauron from crossing the border into Gondor.
Faramir knows that his brother is dead as he had a vision showing Boromir laying in an Elven boat drifting down the River Anduin towards the sea. Later Boromir's horn was washed up on the riverbank, it had been broken in two during the attack of the Uruk-hai.
Faramir's father, Lord Denethor, however is still hoping for news of his son and does not want to believe that Boromir has perished, and Faramir must live with the knowledge that his father has lost his favourite son. This has hardened Faramir and he is desperate to do what is right by his father and win some of the respect and favour that was once bestowed upon Boromir.
When Faramir learns that Frodo carries the One Ring at first he is tempted to use it to his advantage and deliver the hobbits, and their scrawy companion who was found fishing in their sacred, Forbidden Pool, to his father. However he realises that Frodo carries a great burden and has a worthy quest and so not only sets Frodo, Sam and Gollum free, but tries to help them along the way.
And so Frodo, Sam and Gollum continue their journey throught Ithilien towards Cirith Ungol where they plan to enter Mordor and end their journey.
