Éomer
"I am named Éomer son of Éomund, and am called the Third Marshal of Riddermark."
Éomer

The leader of the Riders of Rohan that Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli meet as they cross the plains of the Riddermark is named Éomer, the son of Éomund and nephew of King Théoden. Both his parents died when he was young so he and his sister were raised by their Uncle. As with all the Rohirrim he is a gifted rider and swordsman, tall, fair-haired and loyal to his lands.
At first he is wary of the three travellers, suspecting them to be spies of the Dark Lord or something similar. Once the three travellers have introduced themselves Éomer becomes less hostile, however when he learns of what the companions are looking for he regretfully tells them that their search has been in vain.
He explains that the Uruk-hai were slain by his company but that there were no hobbits among the living when they arrived, nor among the dead when they left. However Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are not ready to give up on their friends and so Éomer gifts them with two horses and bades them luck with their search, although he tells them not to hold out much hope.
Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli take the horses and ride up to where Éomer told them the ambush took place and are there met by a smoking pile of Uruk bodies. At first it would seem that Éomer was right and that the hobbits must have been killed during the battle, however soon Aragorn spots the tracks of the hobbits and when they follow them they lead right into Fangorn Forest. The companions have no choice but to follow them.
