Elrond
"I was there the day the strength of Men failed"
Elrond

Elrond is the founder of Rivendell. During the Second Age he created it as a safe-haven for his people while the great war against Sauron was taking place. Elrond served as a herald to the Elven-king Gil-galad during the Battle of Dagorlad in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. He tried to convince Isildur to cast the One Ring into the Fires of Mount Doom and so, an Age later, he once again tries to aide in the destruction of the Ring.
Elrond's father was Eärendil the Mariner and his mother the fair Elf Elwing. He also bears one of the Three, the Rings of Power forged by the Elves in the Second Age; Vilya - the Ring of Air. He is known as Elrond Half-Elven, this is because his family can be traced directly to Beren a mortal man and the Elven princess Lúthien, who gave up her immortality to stay with him in Middle-earth rather than travelling to the Grey Havens.
Elrond also has a daughter - Arwen and two sons, as well as this he raised Arathorn's son, Aragorn, the Last Chief of the Dúnedain and heir to the throne of Gondor.
It is in Rivendell that Elrond holds Council with the peoples of Middle-earth to decide the fate of the One Ring, he holds himself responsible for the failure of the destruction of the Ring many years ago and so at the Council of Elrond the fate of the Ring, and the Ring-bearer, is decided.
