Denethor
"My father is a noble man"
Boromir

Lord Denethor is the official ruler of Gondor, since the line of Kings failed the title of Steward has been passed down from father to son. He does not now want to believe that any King will return and remove him from his seat in the Great Hall. However his seat not a throne, instead it is a plain black seat situated at the foot of the actual throne.
Denethor, son of Ecthelion and father of Boromir and Faramir, is slowly slipping in to madness. He is fighting a losing battle against the evil of the world and has been forced to lay his eldest (and some would say favourite) son to the grave long before his time. This madness has not been helped by his possession and use of a Seeing Stone or Palantír.
He appears angry with Faramir for surviving and so his younger child is working to be twice the son he thinks he should be. When Denethor sees his remaining son he sees the wife and child that have been taken from him and so looking at Faramir brings more grief.
When Pippin meets Denethor he bows down before him and offers his service, offering to become a servant of the Steward. This awards him a post as a Guard of the Citadel.
Soon Faramir leaves to lead his men forth to Osigiliath for one last attempt to regain the city. His father knows that this could be the last time his son ever goes into battle and that he may not return from this fight, however the madness and grief he is suffering cloud his eyes and so he watches his son leave.
