When Saruman hears of Théoden's plan to retreat to Helm's Deep he sends out Warg-Riders to meet the Rohirrim as they walk and ride, burdened down with their women, children and infirm. Luckily the Rohirrim scouts spot them in time and although many are killed or injured in the battle that ensues, the damage is not as it might have been.
In the confusion surrounding the battle Legolas has been hit on the head.
